Ohinemutu is the original settlement for the Maori tribe, Ngati Whakaue. Its location was chosen for the lakeside setting and geothermal energy which was utilised for cooking, bathing and heating. In pre-European times, Ohinemutu was the main centre for the Lake Rotorua region.
A popular attraction is St Faith's Anglican Church. The focal point of the Church is a stained glass window depicting Christ - the image is a unique example of Christianity's acceptance into traditional Maori life. |
